Chapter Fifteen

What Are You?

Luke is waiting for us in front of the abandoned building when Keiran, Arianthe, and I arrive shortly before eight that night.

“Hey man,” Keiran greets Luke with the sort of half handshake-fist bump thing that all guys seem to do.

“I’d say that you’re late, but it looks like I’m the one who is early.” Luke laughs as he greets Arianthe with a kiss on the cheek. When he stops in front of me he pulls me into a loose hug so he can whisper in my ear, “I was afraid you would look different today. I’m glad you don’t.”

“Why would I look different?” I ask in confusion.

Luke ignores my question and releases me. He turns back to Keiran and says, “Have you ever thought of giving this old place a nickname or something other than just ‘the old V.A. home’?”

“Hmm, I never really thought about it before, but we probably should think something up,” Keiran replies thoughtfully as he and Luke head inside the dark building.

“What about ‘the creepy building on the hill’?” Arianthe suggests as she stares up at the crumbling brick façade.

“That’s too obvious,” I laugh off her suggestion as I follow the guys inside. “What about ‘The Haunted Haven’?”

The guys mull over my suggestion for a few minutes until Luke slowly nods at Keiran in silent agreement. Keiran smiles, “I like it. From now on we’ll call it ‘The Haunted Haven’ or T.H.H. for short.”

“Cool,” Arianthe agrees as she heads into the cafeteria. She turns back towards Keiran and asks, “Hey Keiran, can you help me set up the chairs? They’re heavy.”

“Sure,” Keiran wipes his palms on his dark pants and follows Arianthe into the cafeteria.

I stop Luke before he has a chance to join them, “Can we talk for a minute before the others get here?”

Luke shrugs nonchalantly, “Yeah, why not.”

I lead Luke down the decrepit hallway to one of the old patient rooms. A twin bed with a mattress with a large rust colored stain in the center is pushed against one wall.

“This place is so screwed up looking,” Luke murmurs as he looks around. He spots an old wooden chair without a seat on the opposite wall and flips it around before lowering himself onto it.

I chip away at the paint peeling off the nearest wall, “I don’t know, I’ve always sort of been fascinated by abandoned buildings like this. There’s so much history, both good and bad, lurking within these walls.”

“I’ve had to sleep here a few times when I didn’t have anywhere else to go. I can always sense the residual pain draping itself over me like a heavy coat.” Luke murmurs reverently. He clears his throat and snaps out of his thoughts, “so what did you want to talk to me about?”

“What did you mean when you said that you were afraid that I would look different today?” I ask as I kick at a crack in the old linoleum floor.

“You know what I meant Lizette; you’re part succubus.
